About three months ago, Leanne, a dedicated volunteer with Whiskers-a-GoGo, received a call about a litter of kittens living in a dangerous and precarious space. The kittens had been born in a narrow gap between a chain-link fence and a wooden fence, a location where their safety was constantly at risk. With the homeowner’s permission, Leanne carefully cut away part of the wooden fence to reach in and safely remove the tiny kittens. The rescue was delicate but essential to give these newborns a chance at life.
All four kittens were extremely small, but one little runt immediately stood out. Leanne recognized that this kitten would require extra care and attention to survive. She quickly began planning how to provide the warmth, nutrition, and love needed to help this fragile kitten thrive.
Keeping the Family Together
Understanding the importance of keeping the kittens with their mother during the early weeks, Leanne set a humane trap to rescue the mother cat as well. The whole family was safely brought into foster care that very day, no longer wedged between the fences. Freed from the dangerous gap, the kittens could finally grow in a safe and loving environment, surrounded by warmth, care, and affection that would help them flourish.
Hamster: The Tiny Runt with a Strong Will
Sadly, once settled in, the mother cat rejected the tiniest kitten, a calico named Hamster. In the wild, it’s common for mother cats to prioritize the strongest kittens, ensuring the survival of the litter. But Hamster refused to give up. At just one week old, she weighed only 85 grams—much smaller than a typical newborn kitten. When offered a bottle, she latched on with determination, gaining eight grams in just two days. Every feeding was followed by warm cuddles, ensuring Hamster never felt alone or abandoned.
Day by day, Hamster grew stronger, more playful, and more curious. She began to purr, “make biscuits,” and express her personality with boldness, showing signs of the energetic kitten she would soon become. Her foster mom, Leanne, shared that Hamster had “a set of lungs that could wake up the folks in her old neighborhood when she wants to eat,” highlighting the tiny kitten’s incredible spirit and energy.
Growing Up with Her Siblings
As the kittens were gradually weaned, their mother happily retired from motherhood, leaving Hamster thrilled to spend time with her siblings. The once-fragile runt now displayed boundless energy and a fearless spirit. She could be sweet and cuddly one moment, and the next, she would launch surprise attacks on her siblings during playful wrestling sessions. Her confidence and curiosity became increasingly apparent every day.
The Litter’s Unique Personalities
Hamster’s siblings also had their distinct personalities. Pipsqueak, who resembles Hamster, loves to wrestle and engage in playful scuffles. Cupcake, the largest black-and-white kitten, melts into a puddle whenever held, showcasing his gentle nature. Macaroni, a white kitten with an orange cap, quietly seeks affection, acting like a polite little gentleman. Despite being the smallest at birth, Hamster has now outgrown two of her siblings, demonstrating her incredible growth and determination.
Hamster has truly thrived. She is known for her playful antics, adventurous spirit, and healthy appetite. From a tiny, vulnerable kitten stuck between fences to a lively, strong, and happy little cat, Hamster’s journey is an inspiring story of resilience and love.
Now, Hamster and her siblings are ready for their forever homes, each with a personality that will bring joy to their future families. These kittens, once trapped in a narrow gap, are now safe, healthy, and full of life, thanks to the dedication and compassion of Leanne and Whiskers-a-GoGo.
