Florida Driver Rescues Tiny Kitten From Busy Road, Shocked to Learn It’s Actually a Wild Bobcat

A young bobcat kitten, later named Spirit Feather, was rescued by kindhearted strangers who mistook her for a domestic kitten on a busy road. She was underweight but otherwise healthy and was taken to Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida. There, she began rehabilitation to prepare for life back in the wild. Despite her feisty nature, her wild instincts were seen as a good sign. With care, toys, and space to grow, Spirit Feather thrived and eventually moved to an outdoor enclosure. She learned to hunt and was successfully released back into the wild, where she belongs.

A few kind-hearted Samaritans came across what they thought was a tiny kitten stranded in the middle of the road and quickly stopped their car to help. The driver rushed into the traffic, determined to save the little animal from danger. However, upon getting closer, they were shocked to discover that this was not an ordinary kitten at all.

When the rescuers looked carefully, they realized the animal had a short tail, sharp instincts, and a wild personality. It was actually a baby bobcat. According to Big Cat Rescue, “When this little bobcat was separated from her mom and found wandering in the middle of the road, the good Samaritans immediately took her to a clinic.”

Big Cat Rescue, based in Tampa, Florida, stepped in to take over. The staff explained that even though the bobcat was not happy about being handled, this was actually a good sign, as it showed her natural wild instincts were still intact. They emphasized that for her to survive in the wild one day, she must always see humans as a threat. Thankfully, aside from being a bit underweight, the little bobcat was in good health.

Often, young wild cats get separated from their families when urban development forces animals to relocate from their natural habitats. That may have been what happened in this case. Although the exact circumstances remain unknown, this kitten now had a second chance through rehabilitation. The rescuers named her Spirit Feather. The name was chosen to honor another bobcat called Little Feather, while also reflecting the strength and spirit this little one showed.

At just two and a half months old, Spirit Feather was full of energy. She was expected to stay at Big Cat Rescue for three months before being ready for release back into the wild. To keep her entertained and comfortable, the staff gave her a stuffed toy squirrel to snuggle with and lots of cardboard boxes to play with. Her feisty nature was clear—she could destroy a large box in one night!
